Love Songs

So, I quite liked making my Ships of the Noughties list and have decided to do another one. This time, in honour of Valentine's Day, I have listed my top five love songs. And then I decided to do my top five bittersweet love songs. And my top five anti-love songs. (I had originally called them bitter love songs but that's not quite accurate. Some are bitter, some are just "This relationship's over and that's a good thing.")

They're all songs I've got on my iTunes and I've tried to avoid the usual cliche love songs that you'd find on those compilation albums that are so ubiquitous this time of year!

Five Love Songs.

5. Favourite Adventure (Wedding Song) – K’s Choice

There you are,
Your beauty consoles me.
I’ve gone far
And I almost didn’t find you
And I almost lived without you
There is nothing in this world I’d rather do
Than live in you.

4. Push – Sarah McLachlan

There are times I can’t decide, when I can’t tell up from down
You make me feel less crazy, when otherwise I’d drown.
But you pick me up and brush me off and tell me I’m ok
Sometimes that’s just what we need to get us through the day.

3. First Day of My Life – Bright Eyes

And you said
“This is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care, I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy.”

2. You Rise and Meet the Day – Dar Williams

And I love you all the time
I had always feared that some gloomy ingratitude would seize me
But you have held the dream like every morning finds
A way to hang the sun up in the sky
And now I think I have it too
The greatest part I learned from you
You rise and meet the day.

1. Eric’s Song – Vienna Teng

And with each passing day
The stories we say
Draw us tighter into our addiction
Confirm our convictions
That some kind of miracle passed on our heads
And how I am sure, like never before
Of my reasons for defying reason
Embracing the seasons
We dance through the colours
Both followed and led.

This was actually the song that introduced me to Vienna Teng and I am so glad it did because I am absolutely in love with her music. This is my favourite love song at the moment and there was never any question of it having the number one spot. My only difficulty was deciding which section of lyrics to quote!

Five Bittersweet Love Songs.

5. Martha – Tom Waits

And I was always so impulsive, I guess that I still am
And all that really mattered then was that I was a man
I guess that our being together was never meant to be
And Martha, Martha, I love you, can’t you see.

4. Antebellum – Vienna Teng

In the spring we climbed the rolling hills
And talked about our budding plans
And we smiled, our faces like a mirror
Showing us our secret sides.
But then the fights
The sharp words splintering the night,
How I couldn’t be what you’d need
But oh how I could make you bleed.

3. The Ballad of Mary Magdalen - Cry Cry Cry

A love like this comes but once
This I do believe
And I’ll not see his like again
As I live and breathe
And I’m sorry if I might offend
But I’ll never see
How the tenderness I shared with him
Became a heresy.

Jesus loved me, this I know
Why on earth did I ever let him go?
He was always faithful
He was always kind
But he walked off with this heart of mine.

2. February – Dar Williams

First we forgot where we planted those bulbs last year
And then we forgot that we’d planted at all
Then we forgot what plants are altogether
And I blamed you for my freezing and forgetting and
The nights were long and cold and scary
Can we live through February?

1. Beloved Wife – Natalie Merchant

You were the love for certain of my life
For fifty years simply my beloved wife
With another love I’ll never lie again
It’s you I can’t deny
It’s you I can’t defy
A depth so deep into my grief
Without my beloved soul I renounce my life
As my right
Now alone without my beloved wife
My beloved wife.

This song always makes me tear up because it reminds me of my grandparents. Natalie Merchant puts such real emotion into her singing and I love how her voice catches on the words.

Five Anti-love Songs

5. Old Shoes (and Picture Postcards) – Tom Waits

(I couldn't actually find a Tom Waits video for this song, but this cover sounds just like him)

I can see by your eyes, it’s time now to go
So I’ll leave you to cry in the rain
Though I held in my hand the key to all joy
Honey my heart was not born to be tamed.

4. Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right – Bob Dylan

So long honey, babe
Where I’m bound I can’t tell
Goodbye’s too good a word babe
So I’ll just say fare thee well
I ain’t saying you treated me unkind
You coulda done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice it’s all right.

3. As Cool As I Am – Dar Williams

You tried to make me doubt, to make me guess
Tried to make me feel like a little less
Oh I liked you when you soul was bared
I thought you knew how to be scared.
And now it’s amazing what you did to make me stay
But truth is just like time, it catches up and it just keeps going.
Oh and so I’m leaving, you can find out how much better things can get
And if it helps I’d say I feel a little worse than we did when we met.

2. Don’t Think of Me – Dido

When you see her sweet smile, baby
Don’t think of me.
When she lays in your warm arms
Don’t think of me.
And it’s too late
And it’s too bad.
Don’t think of me.

1. Idiot Wind – Bob Dylan

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth
Blowing down the backroads heading south
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth
You’re an idiot babe
It’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

Bob Dylan is pretty much the king of the anti-love song, I could probably have filled this section with his songs alone. Idiot Wind is a bit of an unoriginal choice but it's just so amazingly bitter that I couldn't not have it as my number one.
