Going Up

Today was my first day with Year 1. They all seem so much more grown up than the Reception class, and more easily distracted when I'm trying to get them to do things. Also going off on weird tangents that involve them asking me if sticky paper is sticky enough to trap humans. Why do they want to know? Are they planning something?

Hmm... I shall be keeping an eye on these children.

But now... it's Meme Time!

Year 1 can't be moulded. They're a lot less malleable than Year R, but in that vein, they have more distinct personalities as well. The main problem with Year 1 is that their teaching can be pretty routine, as it's all building-skills-and-preparing-for-KS1. Year R is more random, and it's skill discovery rather than development. There's more space for creativity.

The strength of Year 1, conversely, is that they are very similar to Year R is a lot of respects; Year 2, by contrast, are at the brink of KS2, and in many ways end up rather distinct from the rest of the infant classes, whereas with R and 1, it's easier to organise communal activities (exampla gratia: year R/1 singing groups often include stuff like Sing a Rainbow, which may be considered too simplistic for Year 2, who already know their colours).

They also don't so SATs, which helps.

I don't know if it's because I went to Year R first or because their less-structured lessons made it easier for them to do their own thing, but I found that Year R seem to have more personality than Year 1.

I'm going into Year 3 next, skipping Year 2, which is a shame since I won't get to see the differences you mentioned between them compared to the earlier years.

Year R have more distinct personalities, it is true. I think my second sentence could have been structured better - but that is what I meant!
Year 2 are a 'difficult' class. I sometimes teach Year 2 on my own, which is a trial. They don't know where they are, and how much they can get away with if left alone with a TA. but then again, Year 5 are like that too. With Year 3, however, it tends to depend entirely on the school. They seem to be quite nice, however, in general; let me know how you get on.

Oh, and is 9 Men in Tights?

On your own? Scary.

I'll get to see Year 5 on Thursday. Year 3 were quite nice, although easily bored and prone to amusing themselves in stupid ways. Such as trying to hop all the way back from church.

Number 9 is indeed Men in Tights. Well done.
